My coronation was held the next morning as the sun rose and shafts of bright, warm sunlight broke into the vastness of the throne room.
I sat on the throne in heavy, golden vestments that had been secreted away for centuries and my heart was a stone in my chest. Nerves and insecurity had my hands clawing at the carved arms of the gilded chair. There was not even a hint of a smile amongst any of my half-awake kin.
Did I care?
Naal stroked his fingertip along the sensitive length of my neck and the pleasurable shiver flicked my gaze up to him. He was magnificent in the fresh morning light. Tall and lean and clothed in shimmering black robes, his hair shinning and loose, and for that brief moment of contact, his dark eyes burned with a shared lust.
Did I care about my family? Not for half a heartbeat.
Naal straightened and swept down the steps beside my throne, his boot heels loud and echoing. An aura of power pulsed from him and no one could doubt that the great winged horse that had sat behind the throne was this man. It was something felt, something known deep in the mind and heart and belly.
His dark gaze turned over the room. None seemed able to meet it. Which was perfectly fine. He was mine. No one else’s.
“Your curse is broken.” Naal’s smooth voice filled the air and my skin pricked. “Maera Anticia, Daughter of the House of Constandine, is your Queen. Magic has chosen.” He paused, and all was silence. Utter silence. “Do any of you contest it? If you do, you will answer to me. I was the winged Stallion and I am still the Defender of the Throne.” He spread a pale palm and the bright fire of magic leapt across his long fingers. His eyebrow arched. “Anyone?”
I caught the wicked turn of his mouth and a pulse of pure pleasure charged my still-not-sated flesh. His lips, his tongue—in either of his forms—was skilled.
“I will shred those ridiculous golden vestments, throw you over the arm of your throne and fuck you. Hard. Ruthlessly. As Stallion and man.”
His wicked words roiled through my already tight flesh and I fought not to squirm. New Queens did not wriggle. “Get rid of them.”
“Is that a command, my Queen?”
I glared at the back of his head and his wanton smile only deepened. He lifted his chin and spread his arms. The arc of magic faded and drifted into the air as bright sparks of dust.
“Queen Maera Anticia reigns uncontested.”
His voice echoed, the power of it charging the air. A declaration, bound in magic. Unbreakable. Fuck. I really was the Queen.
Naal drew in a long breath as his gaze raked over the assembled nobles. “You may leave the presence of your Queen. The land, the realm is free.”
Feet shuffled, the heavy brush of velvet and satin over stone easing back the thick silence.
“Bow to your Queen… Now.”
It was a growled command, laced with ancient power, and my kin froze as if winter had churned back on a wild wind into the throne room.
